PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE  —  Once completed, the aquatic facility at the new PCU Centre will have a wave pool, a slide, a hot tub and a 25-metre competitive pool, but more important than all of that, now it will also have a name.

Shindico Realty Inc. of Winnipeg, owned by former Portagers Robert and Sandy Shindleman, has secured the naming rights for the multiplex’s aquatic centre.

The Portage Recreation Committee, along with the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie and the City of Portage, made the announcement this morning at a press conference at Boston Pizza in Portage.

Shindico’s winning bid of just over $50,000, paid upfront, will assure the company the exclusive naming rights over the aquatic centre for the next 20 years.

“The Shindleman family has quite a history in the Portage area. Robert and Sandy have created an incredible business in Shindico, and I believe they have always done their best to help develop Portage la Prairie through their projects,” said recreation committee co-chairman Brian Gilbert. “(They) have always maintained a bit of a soft spot for the city, and we are very proud and very happy that they were able to step up and help us with this complex.”

Gilbert wouldn’t say how many other businesses bid for the naming rights, but did say Shindico had the highest bid.
