Clearspring Centre in Steinbach, Manitoba was packed with eager shoppers on March 26, as the new 23,000 square foot Winners department store opened its doors. John Pearson and I were invited to attend the official grand opening of Steinbach’s first Winners location. When we arrived at the mall, you could feel the energy and the excitement of the approximate 300 residents that turned out for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
This is Winners first small market retail location in Manitoba. Steinbach was chosen for a variety of reasons including the fact that it is Manitoba’s fastest growing market with solid demographic and shopping trends. It is also the only enclosed shopping centre in Eastern Manitoba, servicing a retail trade area of approximately 55,000.
“Winners opening weekend was a huge success drawing tremendous traffic to the centre,” says Clearspring Centre mall manager Bob Frey. “It exceeded our expectations.”
Winners arrival in Steinbach has had a profoundly positive impact on the community. The excitement started when approximately 400 people turned out for the job fair that was arranged by the store. In total, 65 local residents were hired which in-turn resulted in a boost to the local economy.
Shindico is proud to have brought many first to market retailers to Steinbach, including Sportchek, Dollarama, Boston Pizza and Walmart Supercentre which helped grow the tax base and reduce retail leakage to Winnipeg and the USA.

Clearspring Centre is a 331,000 square foot shopping centre anchored by Walmart Supercentre and Sobeys. It is the only regional shopping centre in Southeastern Manitoba and is located approximately 65 kilometers southeast of downtown Winnipeg.
The Centre is comprised of a diverse mix of over 30 tenants including Mark’s Work Warehouse, Reitman’s, Shoe Warehouse, Dollarama, Sport Chek, Warehouse One, Ardene and The Source. Free standing buildings on the site include Staples, Smitty’s, Subway, Domino’s Pizza and Boston Pizza.
